Why You Should Be Networking More

Networking seems to be the buzz word that you cannot escape. Here's why you should be making it a top priority on your to-do list.

Networking seems to be the buzz word that you just cannot escape, and it can be time-consuming, awkward, and sometimes incredibly draining. It’s understandable why making small talk with strangers is not at the top of your to-do list when your calendar is already bursting at the seams. However, a strong professional network can not only help you land the job of your dreams faster, but it could also give your work life a competitive edge on your career journey.

Self-imposed barriers and inhibitions are preventing women in the workplace from networking strategically. They tend to undersell their value and strengths, and are reluctant to leverage their connections as a means to get ahead in their careers. And when they do network it is usually with other women. We’re here to encourage you to move out of your comfort zone and help comprehend the true advantages of investing time and effort into efficient networking.

Networking involves establishing and nurturing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with the people you meet. The most connected people are often the most successful.

Networking can help:

Showcase your skill set while also contributing to improving it

Networking can help gain access to the necessary resources that will foster your career development.

Improve confidence and communication skills

Meeting people who are on similar journeys/career paths to you can help relieve stress and gain a better understanding of the careerscape

Broaden your horizons

An increase in open-mindedness every time you socialise with people from diverse backgrounds with varied perspectives, can help you to become a better team player.

Level the playing field and learn from others’ mistakes

While networking you meet prospective mentors, partners and clients. This in turn helps you to stay on top of the latest trends in your industry and keep a pulse on the job market.

Create and maintain a good reputation with a wide range of people

A positive word about you from a relevant source to your potential employer works like magic. Your networking can increase chances of getting good referrals and sought after job opportunities.

Empower you and others within your network

Prioritising networking and paying it forward to the connections you’ve made along the way, can make all the difference in the long-term.

Networking is an especially important step to take when you are on your startup journey. If you’re thinking about starting your own business or are in your initial stages of building your brand, networking can help you create a support system as well as establish a pool of knowledge and talent to draw from when the need comes up.

So come up with a strategy, understand why you need it and take the plunge. Don’t forget that networking isn’t a one time life event. It should be a regular occurrence on your calendar, whether it be in person events or even reaching out and building connections online with people outside of your personal circle. The connections you make should be maintained and should grow with you as you progress up the ladder and pave the way for more Badass Bosses!
