Why "Real Men" Should Accept Their Femininity

Each individual possesses a unique combination of masculine and feminine qualities, and these attributes may evolve and change throughout their lives.

Gender and sex are distinct concepts that are often confused or used interchangeably. Sex refers to the biological and physical characteristics that typically categorise individuals as male or female. It is determined by factors such as reproductive organs, chromosomes, and hormones. On the other hand, gender is a social and cultural construct that encompasses the roles, behaviours, and expectations associated with being male or female in a particular society. Gender identity is a deeply felt sense of being male, female, or something else, which may or may not align with one's assigned sex at birth. It's essential to recognize that everyone has both masculinity and femininity within them, regardless of their sex or gender identity. These qualities exist on a spectrum and are not limited to any particular gender. Masculinity and femininity encompass a range of characteristics, traits, and behaviours that are not inherently tied to biological sex. Each individual possesses a unique combination of masculine and feminine qualities, and these attributes may evolve and change throughout their lives.

Stepping out of the ‘Man Box’!

Allow me to decode the “man box” for you. “Man box” is a metaphor for all the characteristics you believe a “real man” should possess, characteristics that have been incessantly put into your brain from the day you were born. It is a concept that refers to the societal expectations and pressures placed on men to conform to a narrow set of masculine norms and behaviours. It represents a set of rigid expectations that dictate how men should look, act, and express themselves, often limiting their emotional range and self-expression. Stepping out of the man box involves challenging and breaking free from these traditional expectations, allowing men to embrace their authentic selves and reject harmful stereotypes. Many characters from movies manage to accept their femininity with grace, like Ethan from ‘Love, Simon’ Douglas from ‘Eastsiders’, Iqbal from ‘Raazi’ and Bhashkor from ‘Piku’.

Here are some steps one can take to step out of the man box:

Self-awareness:

Start by examining your own beliefs and attitudes about masculinity. Reflect on the ways in which societal expectations have influenced your behaviour and perception of what it means to be a man.

Question stereotypes:

Challenge the stereotypes and assumptions that society imposes on men. Recognize that there is a wide range of ways to be a man, and that embracing diverse expressions of masculinity benefits both individuals and society as a whole.

Embrace vulnerability:

Cultivate emotional intelligence and allow yourself to be vulnerable. Understand that experiencing and expressing a full range of emotions is not a sign of weakness but of strength. Seek support from friends, family, or professionals to navigate emotional challenges.

Challenge toxic behaviours:

Recognize and confront toxic behaviours such as aggression, dominance, or objectification of others. Foster healthy and respectful relationships built on empathy, consent, and equality.

Seek diverse perspectives:

Surround yourself with diverse voices and perspectives. Engage in conversations and activities that broaden your understanding of gender and masculinity. Listen to the experiences of others, particularly those who have been marginalised or excluded due to traditional gender norms.

Advocate for change:

Take an active role in challenging harmful gender norms and promoting gender equality. Speak up against sexism and discrimination, and support initiatives that seek to break down gender-based barriers and stereotypes.

Why is masculinity in women more likely to be accepted than femininity in men?

The acceptance of masculinity in women and femininity in men is influenced by deep-rooted societal norms and cultural expectations surrounding gender. Several factors contribute to the greater acceptance of masculinity in women compared to femininity in men:

Historical context:

Throughout history, society has been structured around patriarchal norms that place greater value on traits associated with masculinity. As a result, women who adopt traditionally masculine qualities may be seen as challenging gender norms, but it is often more readily accepted because it aligns with a power dynamic that has historically favoured men.

Power dynamics:

Traditional gender roles have perpetuated a hierarchical system where masculine traits and behaviours are associated with power, strength, and authority. Women who adopt these traits may be seen as breaking free from gender limitations, potentially challenging the status quo, and are sometimes praised for "assertiveness" or "ambition." In contrast, femininity in men can be perceived as a deviation from these power dynamics, potentially threatening the traditional gender order.

Gender stereotypes:

Society often associates femininity with weakness, submissiveness, or emotional sensitivity, while masculinity is linked to strength, assertiveness, and rationality. These stereotypes can lead to the devaluation and stigmatisation of femininity in men, as it challenges expectations of what it means to be a man.

Homophobia and transphobia:

The acceptance of masculinity in women may also be tied to societal attitudes toward sexual orientation and gender identity. Women who express masculinity are not necessarily presumed to be lesbian or transgender, whereas men who exhibit femininity may face assumptions or prejudice regarding their sexual orientation or gender identity. Homophobia and transphobia can intensify the negative societal reactions to femininity in men.

Double standards:

There are often double standards in society's expectations for men and women. Women are sometimes encouraged to adopt masculine qualities to succeed in male-dominated fields or to break through glass ceilings, whereas men who embrace femininity may face backlash and social consequences.

What makes you a “real” man?

In the context of feminism, the notion of a "real" man is redefined and expanded to challenge traditional gender roles and promote equality. A real man, according to feminism, is someone who embraces and supports gender equality, dismantles harmful patriarchal norms, and recognizes the value of diverse expressions of masculinity and femininity. He acknowledges the experiences and struggles faced by women and marginalised genders, actively works to dismantle systemic oppression, and stands up against gender-based discrimination. A real man understands that true strength lies in empathy, respect, and the willingness to learn and grow alongside women in the pursuit of a more equitable society.

It is important to challenge societal norms and encourage a more inclusive and expansive understanding of gender. Men can benefit from recognizing that embracing femininity does not diminish their masculinity but rather allows them to express a wider range of emotions, build stronger relationships, and foster personal growth. It requires open-mindedness, self-acceptance, and the willingness to challenge stereotypes and societal expectations. By embracing femininity, men can contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society, promoting understanding and respect for all gender expressions.

In conclusion, dear reader, let us embark on a whimsical journey through the realm of gender norms and the audacious quest for real men to embrace their femininity. Picture a world where men dance fearlessly in flowery meadows, unabashedly shedding tears while belting out power ballads, and twirling in tutus with the grace of a woodland fairy. Let us shatter the rigid constraints of societal expectations, for within the kaleidoscope of gender lies a vibrant tapestry of diverse expressions.
